Analytical Services

Once samples have been brought back to the laboratory, all of the routine and specialized analyses and material handling functions are performed, including:
  • Geologic Description (Fractures, Lithology, Photography, etc.);
  • Residual Gas Content (by Grinding in a Sealed Vessel at constant temperature);
  • Proximate, Ultimate, Calorific Value Analyses (by other laboratories);
  • Vitrinite Reflectance and Maceral Petrography Analyses (by other laboratories);
  • Equilibrium Moisture Content (per ASTM specifications);
  • Apparent Specific Gravity (by Archimedes’ Principle); and
  • High-Pressure Adsorption Isotherm (with Methane, CO2 or Other Gases).

All analyses are brought together in an integrated, comprehensive report. For example:

  • Proximate analyses are used for determining gas contents of coal on a dry, ash-free or mineral-matter free basis;
  • Apparent Specific Gravity analyses are used for calculating gas resource concentrations on a MMcf/acre-ft basis;
  • Measured Gas Compositions are used for adjusting Adsorption Isotherms to more accurately represent the field;
  • Isotherms and Reservoir Pressures are used to determine Gas Saturations and Critical Desorption Pressures, etc.

As required for the individual job, these results fee back into the Engineering and Geology work for appraising gas resources on a per-well basis, modeling production rates, designing well drilling and completion plans, and so forth.
